Comments about Putian Projects Submitted

Hi Kids,

Some of you have submitted your projects. As we look through, we noticed that some of you merely mentioned what happened from Day 1 to Day 7.

It would be good to include the following in your reflections:
  • How has this trip helped you to achieve the objectives?
  • What strengths (good points) have you learnt from the Putian pupils?
  • Compare some aspects of the culture between Singapore and Putian/Xiamen.
  • How do you feel now as a Singaporean?
  • Are you proud to be a Singaporean? Why?

Please try your best to modify your presentations this weekend and submit to any of the 3 teachers on Monday (via email, thumbdrive, CD).

To date, no one has submitted the project in Chinese. Would anyone like to complete the project in Chinese?

Our Journey - Has it ended or just begun?

Dear Kids,

Our journey - has it ended or just begun?
Can you remember why we wanted to visit Putian (and Xiamen) in the very first place?

The objectives of internationalization are:
1)to create the International Awareness of the pupils,
2)to enable the pupils to be more cultural savvy, and
3)to reinforce the rootedness of the pupil as a Singaporean.

How has this trip helped you to achieve the objectives above?
What strengths (good points) have you learnt from the Putian pupils?
Compare some aspects of the culture between Singapore and Putian/Xiamen.
How do you feel now as a Singaporean? Are you proud to be a Singaporean? Why?

Please take a well-deserved break and remember to get the following tasks completed:
1. Evaluation form for the Putian Trip (distributed at the airport)

2. Individual Project on Putian Trip
- You may choose any of the following topics to talk about.
- You can present in English or Chinese.
- You may choose to present via PowerPoint or Photo-Story.
- You must include your reflections about the topic you have chosen and what you have learnt from that visit.
  • School-life in Putian - Putian Experimental School & Fuqing Xishan School
  • Cultural Similarities / Differences between Putian & Singapore
  • Places of Interests in Putian / Xiamen
(Refer to http://hws-putian.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html for the places we visited.)
  • How you have learnt to appreciate Singapore more

Deadline of Project : 1st week of Term 3
Please submit your project (email or in thumbdrive or cd) to your group's Teacher-in-charge.

You will get to share your learning expericence with the rest of the school when it re-opens.
I'm sure you'll find joy in recalling the entire experience! :)

Short Excerpt of Events

We began our day with a wonderful breakfast at the hotel.

May we have scrambled eggs, please?

First stop - Ji Mei School Village

What a scenic place to remember!

That is Mr Tan Kah Kee standing behind us.

While the teacher was telling a story, the two girls stole time to take a photo.

Then it was time for Tea Culture. We went to Dr. Tea for a tea-demonstration.
Queueing up at the Xiamen Airlines' outline.

After checking in our luggage, we took another photo to remember that moment.

Waiting to board the plan.

Finally arrived at the Changi Airport. Cheers!

Baggage collection time.

Parents, pupils and teachers were relieved, tired and happy to see one another. I hope that all of you have benefitted from the trip, in terms of knowledge and skills.

Time to rest... :)

We've Landed Safely!

Wow! We've finally made it home. Our parents were waiting patiently at the airport for us. Thanks. :)

I'm uploading the photos for putian6 and putian7 now. It should be done in another 30 minutes' time. (Lots of photos to upload.) Not to worry, the teachers will be issuing a Photo-DVD to each participant which comprises the photos of the entire journey. You should be receiving it when the school reopens.

Frankly, as we come to the end of our trip, we're beginning to miss all the kids already. We felt a little sad to return the kids to the parents. We have had such a wonderful time together, learning amidst all the fun.

Although it has been only a week, the time spent together has bonded us further. We're not just teachers and pupils - we're FRIENDS!

On the return trip, some of them fell asleep on board the plane. As I watched them sleep soundly (and drooling), I couldn't help but "sayang" them on their heads, ensuring that their heads don't get knocked against anything. They're really a bunch of TERRIFIC kids and they've made Hong Wen School and Singapore proud!

We miss ALL of YOU!

How I wish I could take and share the pictures with you. Later, we went to the book store and bought many books. We had fun after that we went to hotel. I like Putian more then Xiamen because I also realise that the pupils there respect the friendship very much. I think I will miss 90% of Putain and 10% of Xiamen.

From Yin Cai:
Today was a fun day. We went to many places such as the paino museum, Gu Lang Yu and the bookstore. Hope to see all of you at the airport. I can't wait.

The best is that we get to shop at much as we want. I really like the shop here as the things are so cheap.I really enjoyed the time there. If by any chance I would also like to come here again. Dad and Mum I really hope you will like the gifts that I've bought for you.

From Rachel:
Today was fun as we sat the river boat here to get to Gulang Island. When we were there, the scenery there was beautiful. After lot of sight-seeing, we went to the piano museum there. After everything, we went back to the hotel to prepare for tomorrow.

Yet Another Eventful Day... Smiile!

Dear all,

The whole set of today's photos can be found at
http://www.hwsonline.org/putian5.zip

(Copy and paste into a new window.)

Here's a summary of today's events:

(Lesson time)

We attended lessons at the Putian School this morning. P.E. was especially fun. Our pupils tried skipping together with their buddies from Putian School. Some of them had lessons in Chinese Painting.

While the pupils attended lessons, the teachers had some time to interact further with the teachers from the school. We exchanged information about our education systems in both countries and shared with them how we motivate pupils to read English and Chinese books.

When it was time to leave, the pupils from Putian showered us with their warm wishes and farewell gifts.

Our pupils were like SUPERSTARS! They had so many fans and spent time signing “autographs” and exchanging contact details.

Even the teachers from both schools had become friends over the four days of interaction.

Look! Our friends from Putian sending us off.

Wow! What a harvest! We only prepared keychains for them but received such huge presents in return. How are we going to bring them back home?

The girls from both schools met again along the road and those from Putian School were still sobbing because we were leaving them. They gave one another one last hug. We really really had to leave. It was such a touching moment for all of us.

Mummies and Daddies, please do not get angry. We had our lunch at DICO’s fastfood restaurant today. We had been having meals at Chinese restaurants for the past four days and we thought that it would be refreshing for the pupils to try something different today. As you can see, each and every one enjoyed his/her meal to the last morsel.

At the Xishan Wushu School, Jarret was invited to perform his Wu Duan Nan Quan for the audience, comprising pupils and trainers of the school and pupils from Poi Ching Primary School. Wow! Our future Jet Li of Singapore!

An exchange of tokens between the two aspiring Wushu experts.

At last, we have reached Xiamen. The kids have had a long day and all ready to rest for the night.

Tomorrow is the day for sight-seeing and we're looking forward to visit the bookshop.

Keep in touch!

A Snippet of our Performance

Dear Parents,

Here's a treat for you - a short performance by the kids. They sang confidently although they had only rehearsed a few times. They were simply a delightful bunch and the audience liked their singing.

Today's pictures (and the video-clip) can be found at
http://www.hwsonline.org/putian4.zip

(Copy and paste into a new window.)

Tomorrow, we'll be attending lessons at Putian School again before going to Fuqing Xishan School. We will be travelling to Xiamen in the evening and checking into another hotel late again. So if you do not hear from us, do not be alarmed.

I am not sure if we will be able to get any internet access there - I will ask and if it is not too late (or you see me online).

At Xiamen, we'll be visiting places of interests and of course, the book-shop. (The kids' luggages are already so full that I doubt they can squeeze in anymore things.)

Anyway, enjoy the pictures.

Mdm Lim JL

Busy Day

Dear Parents,

Today is going to be a really busy and long day for the pupils. We have to visit the two schools and perform wushu and singing for them. We will also be visiting a media (newscasting) station before returning for another sumptuous dinner in a revolving restaurant (at the top floor of this hotel). The kids will certainly be tired.

Tomorrow afternoon, we will be setting off to Xishan to visit a school there.

So, we will try to let the kids pack and rest well tonight. If you need to communicate via webcam, we hope that the conversation will be kept brief. Otherwise, we will just post the day's pictures here for your viewing pleasure and keepsake.

Thanks,

What We Have Learnt Today

Dear all,

Sorry to keep you waiting. The kids took turns to do their reflections and there're only 2 computers here, so we took a long time to complete. Some of them posted their reflections yesterday and requested to take a break. :)

The set of photos for Day 3 is at

http://www.hwsonline.org/putian3.zip

(Copy and Paste into a new window.)

From MalPang:
I have enjoyed myself today. I learnt some new Chinese words during the Chinese lesson. Tomorrow, I have to perform on stage. How are you at home?

-------------------------------------------
From Jam.S:
During maths lesson, the teacher showed us some guess-and-check questions. She also told us another way to do the question. After that lesson, we had Chinese lesson. The teacher talked about the beauty of Africa. We had to list out the describing words. I will tell you more when I go back home.

-------------------------------------------

From Rachel:
The art lesson in the school was very fun as we learnt how to draw 山水画. The teacher explained everything about this topic just for us. After the art lesson, we exchanged class and went on to their music room. The room was very different from us because it didn't have any air-conditioner and instead of sitting on the floor, the students sat on chairs. The computer lesson was also very interesting as we did a lot of work about the 四川 earthquake. I saw alot of art-work done by the students and they were very nice.
-------------------------------------------
From Felicia:
When I first went to the school, they all welcomed us, I was so......shy and I hated it. We went to the basketball court as they used as a parade ground. They sang their National Song. Their standing position was so different from us - they need to salute using their right hand. Then we went to the 第二会议室 at the second floor. We were the VIPs. The buddies and the Putian School teachers came to interact with us. The teachers gave us the time-table for today's lesson. I was appointed to be in 五(二)班 when some of us went in I am so shy the teacher ask the class to clap for us we are ask to say our Chinese names then the buddy will us ask to sit beside them. My buddy was pretty, gentle, kind, loyal, friendly and look hard-working she is the monitress of the class. The first lesson is mathematics very interesting all in Chinese very easy .Our activity is to do maths guess and check for the question the give us. For the first question I can't really solved but then when the explained the method for the 假设法. I have never learnt but maybe next year for the second question I can really solve less then 1 minute. Don't worry about me.
-------------------------------------------
From A.P.S.Y:

Although the weather was bad, I had a wonderful time. Today we went to a school and looked at how the China students study, they will very smart.
A few days ago,my best friends and I played basketball to a group of China students. They lost badly and said that we were very good.
-------------------------------------------
From YiLing:
Today I have made many new friends and I like their method of studying very much. I like putian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!yay...

-------------------------------------------
From AZ : Erm … the two days in Putian is fun. Today I made friends with five buddies. The food is quite nice. Tomorrow we are going to perform soo… excited and nervous [LOL]BB!!!!!!!!

-------------------------------------------
From A.Y.Y.L:
Today was fun and tiring, ‘cause we went shopping. Dinner was yummy!

-------------------------------------------
From TKH:
I had fun in the Putian School as I had learnt many things and I knew how to play the games during the PE lesson.I have made a lot of friends.

From I.Hong: Papa and Mama, don't worry about me. It is very fun here! The school was very weird, as my buddies keep hugging me .YUCK! I kept running around the school. I played ping pong with them today. We were like VIPs and need not queue up.Students played against us and a lot of them lost the game to me and Kian Heng (my friend.) So don't worry about me as it is funhere. Bye Bye.
-------------------------------------------
From Van:
I had a lot of fun in the school today as I met many interesting class-mates in the class. They sometimes joked with me. There were many fun things and the class is quite big. One of the boys helped me to draw a snake. It was nice but SMALL (so sad). I hope that if there is a chance i would one to be like them, able to draw mouse , cow, rooster, dragon, sheep for me haha !! SOOOOOO FUN!!!
-------------------------------------------
From JH:
I had a fun day at the school though the time was so short . I like the 队课because it teaches me how to thank the person by using a powerpoint. I was shocked by the China boy and girl dancing gracefully. I also did the 剪纸. I did a pig-shaped 剪纸. I really enjoyed this TRIP! If there is another chance to go to China again, I would to come here AGAIN!!!

Answers to some Queries

Dear all,

Our apologies for not being able to answer through the chatbox. Apparently, some activeX controls are blocked by the hotel here, so we can only read your comments. Keep posting anyway.

I'll get the remaining pupils to make a post tonight - so sorry about that. It was getting close to bedtime by the time each of them posted and we just had to let them sleep early.

Arix's Mummy, I will check his handphone and ask him to switch it on today.

Malcolm's Daddy, Malcolm is certainly having so much fun... and he is learning to take care of himself. He comes to me for assistance when he needs. I will get him to make a post tonight, too.

Arix's Male Cousin, sorry, but we can't bring chewing gum into Singapore... :)

Yincai's Mummy, your girl is obedient, so not to worry. I will ask her to switch on her handphone too.

The kids will be attending lessons in the morning and will have some shopping time in the afternoon today. I am sure they will be very very excited.

We will post again tonight.

You could take a little trip around Singapore town
In Singapore city bus
To see Collyer Quay and Raffles Place
The Esplanade and all of us

Chorus:
Because in Singapore, Singapore
Their hearts are big and wide you'll find
Because in Singapore, Singapore
You'll find happiness for everyone

Let's go down to the riverside, it's an unforgettable sight
To see the sunrise on a faraway isle, turning darkness into light

( Repeat Chorus )

The buildings are climbing all the way to the sky
And there's a hundred other people who are striving
For people like you and I

Are You EXCITED???

Hey Boys & Girls,

It was a fruitful session we had with you and your parents. Hope we've clarified all your doubts. If you do have any further queries, you may approach me, Mrs Chor or Mdm Chan directly. :-)

Don't get too excited though. Discuss with your parents about your choice of traditional costumes. We will be wearing different ethnic costumes, too.

I'll meet up with all of you again soon.

Regards,
Mdm Lim JL

The school will be organising a trip in late May 2008 to Putian.
Pupils will be focusing on school life in China in general. The schools that we intend to visit are especially skilful in Wushu. We hope that our pupils will be able to learn more from the pupils in Putian.
